Castle Rock Lake was created in the late 1940s when the Castle Rock Dam backed up the Wisconsin and Yellow rivers, transforming the area into a popular destination for boating, fishing, camping and outdoor recreation.

My humans had planned a special vacation to Castle Rock Lake, and I was supposed to go too. We were going to stay at Beach Lake Cottage, a cozy family cottage with a private sandy beach, lake access, hot tub, fire pit, hammock, deck, outdoor shower, and pool table. There were kayaks, paddleboards, a paddle boat, bikes, life jackets, beach toys, fishing poles, games, and everything we could need for a fun family getaway. The cottage even had a well-stocked kitchen, a Weber grill, and a smoker.
I was looking forward to exploring the beach and trails, watching the birds near the Yellow River, and supervising my humans while they fished for bluegill, perch, sunfish, and small bass.
Sadly, we never got to go. I crossed over the Rainbow Bridge before our vacation happened. It became the adventure we dreamed about but never got to take—a trip planned with me, filled with love, and a memory they will always carry in their hearts

Buckhorn Barrens
Buckhorn Barrens is a beautiful place to enjoy the outdoors with your dog.
The peaceful trails wind through oak and pine barrens, offering scenic views, fresh air, and chances to spot local wildlife.
Along the trails, you can enjoy views of the nearby lake and visit the 20-foot observation tower for a wonderful look at the surrounding landscape.

Necedah National Wildlife Refuge

Necedah National Wildlife Refuge is a wonderful spot for a peaceful Wisconsin adventure.
With beautiful wetlands, open prairies, wooded areas, and plenty of wildlife, there’s always something interesting for you and your pup to discover.
Bring your leash and take in the scenery together while watching for sandhill cranes, birds, deer, and other wildlife.
You may even spot signs of some of the Refuge’s bigger residents, including black bears, so keep an eye on the ground for tracks and other wildlife signs as you explore.
Don’t miss the three impressive whooping crane sculptures, and be sure to stop at the viewing decks. The fixed wildlife viewing scopes give you a closer look across the wetlands, where you can watch for cranes, waterfowl, eagles, and other wildlife.
One of the most memorable spots to explore is the Boghaunter Boardwalk, where you and your pup can walk out into the wetland landscape and enjoy a closer look at the water, plants, and wildlife around you. The Boardwalk Loop is 1.75 miles and is part of the larger Boghaunter Trail System.
Dogs are welcome in designated areas, but they must be kept under control and on a leash where required. Be sure to follow posted signs, stay out of closed or restricted areas, give wildlife plenty of space, and remember to clean up after your pup.

Chickadee Rock
When vacationing at Castle Rock Lake, it's fun to discover some of the unique natural features nearby.
One of those is Chickadee Rock at Roche-A-Cri State Park near Friendship.
This unusual sandstone formation rises about 25–30 feet above the trail and is part of the ancient sandstone landscape found throughout this area.
Long before today's lakes and forests, ancient water and glaciers helped shape the land we see today.
So while Chickadee Rock may look like just a big rock, it's actually a little piece of Wisconsin's ancient geological story.
And for those vacationing with their dogs, it's a fun place to stop, explore, and take a few photos together. Your pup may be more interested in the smells than the geology—but that's part of the adventure!

Yellow River Wildlife Area
Yellow River Wildlife Area is one of those places that feels like a hidden gem for a day of exploring with your dog.
Before Castle Rock Dam was built in the late 1940s, this valley was home to forests, farms, and the communities of Germantown and Werner.
Today, more than 2,000 acres of wetlands, woods, and waterways offer plenty of room for a quiet adventure.
And here’s a little secret worth knowing: there’s a tucked-away DNR boat access at the west end of 30th Street. It’s especially handy for kayaks, canoes, and other small boats, giving you a chance to launch with your four-legged adventure buddy and paddle toward the Yellow River Oxbows.
These old river channels have created peaceful ponds and wetlands that are best experienced from the water.
Bring your dog, grab your boat, and spend the day discovering the quieter side of Castle Rock Lake.

The Dirty Turtle is a casual lakeside bar and grill in New Lisbon, with a beach, outdoor seating, marina, boat landing, picnic tables, and a kids’ play area.
Dogs are welcome outside, making it an easy stop for the whole family—including your four-legged adventure buddy.
The menu has plenty of classic lake-day favorites, including burgers, sandwiches, tacos, fish and chips, chicken baskets, appetizers, and a kids’ menu.
During the summer, the Dirty Turtle really comes alive with its outdoor Tiki Pavilion, live music, and beautiful Castle Rock Lake views.
It’s a great place to relax after a day on the water, watch the boats go by, and enjoy some good old-fashioned lake atmosphere.
And then there’s the Turtle Dunk!
Every New Year’s Day, members of the community gather at the Dirty Turtle to jump into the freezing waters of Castle Rock Lake to raise money for cancer causes. The event also includes food, raffles, and other activities, making it a memorable local tradition.
Your dog probably won’t be volunteering for the icy plunge, but they can cheer from the sidelines!
Whether you stop in for a burger on a summer afternoon or come out to support the brave souls at the Turtle Dunk, the Dirty Turtle is a fun and memorable part of the Castle Rock Lake experience.

There's just so much to love about this vacation destination, but there's one thing that would have put Luie Boone's leash in a twist and he would have woofed:
My humans had planned a vacation to Castle Rock Lake in Wisconsin. I was excited to go with them because I loved adventures, being near the water, and spending time with my family. I would have loved walking along the shore, exploring new smells, and splashing in the lake. Castle Rock Lake is known for having lots of boat traffic, and that was the part that made me nervous. The loud engines, speeding boats, and roaring jet skis would have scared me. The big waves they created would have made me nervous too. I would have wanted to stay close to my humans and find a quiet place away from the boats. Still, I know I would have enjoyed the water and the adventure.
Sadly, I crossed the Rainbow Bridge before our vacation could happen. My humans decided they didn't want to go without me, so the trip was canceled. Although I never got to experience Castle Rock Lake, I know we would have made wonderful memories together. Now that I'm across the Rainbow Bridge, where the water is calm and there are no loud boats to frighten me. I hope my humans remember that I would have loved that vacation—and that wherever they go, I will always be with them in their hearts.
