Before I crossed the Rainbow Bridge, my humans had planned a vacation to Fir Mountain Escape in Hood River, Oregon, and it sounded like a place I would have loved. Surrounded by towering fir trees and five peaceful acres, I would have spent my days exploring and watching the deer and wild turkeys that regularly wander through the property. I was also bringing my stuffed Rainbow Trout buddy, Ripple. Hood River is a special place for fish and wildlife, with its important habitat for salmon, steelhead, and bull trout. Ripple would have loved being near those cool, clear waters while I enjoyed the beauty of the river and forest. My humans were excited about the mountain views, hot tub, sunsets from the deck, and sharing meals together in the large, well-stocked kitchen after exploring Hood River and the Gorge. Even though I never got to visit, I know Fir Mountain Escape would have been filled with nature, love, and wonderful memories for my family.

There's just so much to love about this vacation destination, but there's one thing that would have put Luie Boone's leash in a twist and he would have woofed:
My humans loved making plans. I always knew when something exciting was coming because they would talk about new places and the adventures we would share. One place they dreamed of taking me was Hood River, Oregon. They told me about the mountains, fresh air, and trails we would explore together. I imagined the new smells, the sticks I would find, and the joy of being somewhere beautiful with my people. As they planned, they learned Hood River was also full of bicycles. Lots of bicycles.
Fast-moving bikes can be challenging for dogs like me. They can appear quickly, sometimes from behind, and even a friendly dog can become startled or excited. My humans knew me well and wanted our adventure to be safe and happy for everyone.
For dog owners visiting Hood River, remember that cyclists share many of the trails. Keep your dog close, watch for bikes, and give riders plenty of space. A little extra caution helps keep everyone safe. We never made it to those trails. My paws never touched the paths we imagined, but I was still part of the dream. My humans pictured me there, walking beside them with my tail wagging, sharing the adventure we had planned together. The best adventures are the ones shared together — and the love we share stays with us long after the journey ends.
