Luie Boone found out that Huron, Ohio, is known as “The Great Lake Place!” He’s a huge fan of lakes—especially when he can do a big cannonball splash right into the water. Sitting right on the shores of Lake Erie, Huron is the perfect spot for pups and their humans to relax and play. So if you’re after a lakeside getaway where your dog is more than just welcome, this cozy town offers plenty of outdoor adventures, dog-friendly restaurants, and comfy places to stay that roll out the red carpet for both two- and four-legged travelers.

One of the highlights of visiting Huron with your dog is the access to beautiful outdoor spaces, such as Nickel Plate Beach. At this beach, dogs on leashes are allowed during specific hours, which makes it a perfect spot for your pup to enjoy some sand and waves. For dogs who love to romp around off their leash, Erie MetroBark Park is a spacious, fully fenced dog park with separate areas for small and large dogs. It will give your furry friend plenty of room to play and socialize. If you prefer a peaceful walk, the Huron River Greenway MetroPark Trail offers a scenic, leash-friendly route along the water, which is ideal for stretching legs and taking in nature.

Dining out with your dog is a breeze in Huron. Several local restaurants welcome dogs on their outdoor patios, including Harbor House Bar & Grill, which boasts waterfront views. There's also Pier Pub. This pub is a cozy spot by the river, and it's perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring. For a fun treat, Dairy Queen Grill & Chill offers pup cups filled with vanilla ice cream, a sweet way to spoil your best friend. Luie Boone absolutely loves DQ!

Beyond the beach and town, the nearby Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve offers lovely trails where you can walk your dog on a leash through diverse natural habitats. If you're a wildlife lover and enjoy peaceful strolls, it's the perfect spot for you!

From splashing by the lake to strolling through town, Huron, Ohio is packed with pup-friendly fun that you and your four-legged buddy will absolutely love.

What does Luie Boone think of this rental? He woofed:

If we went to the Great Lake Place, we'd stay at Willow Grove Lake House. It's only 200 yards from Lake Erie, which is the perfect distance needed to zoom into a spectacular cannonball! There's private beach access, which is just down the street, so I’ll be zooming that way. It is a neighborhood beach, which means fewer people and more space for me to... behave, of course. My hoomans keep talking about the hot tub at the rental. I don’t really get it, because sitting in hot water doesn’t sound like my kind of fun. Instead I will have my eyes and nose on the grill, giving my best “feed me” face while the burgers cook. Inside, the rental sounds super cozy. There's comfy beds, soft blankets, and big TVs for movie nights. They don’t have cable, so the humans will have to log into their streaming accounts. They have enough of those! Hopefully, they can find a good dog show to watch. If not, I'll go hang out by the lagoon nearby, which has ducks! I’ll try to behave, but let’s be honest—if one of them quacks too loud, I might have to get ready for a duck-dog quack-off/bark-off. Back at the rental, the yard is big and perfect for zoomies. The neighborhood’s quiet too, which means lots of peaceful walks and new smells. If there’s sand in my fur, the smell of grilled fiddles floating through my nose, and a duck or two to supervise, I’d say that’s the perfect vacation!

At Wyandot MetroPark, you can enjoy a leisurely walk on cut grass paths, which wind through tall grass and weeds. Visitors are advised to be cautious of ticks and snakes in the area. One of Luie Boone's hoomans is terrified of snakes, so Luie Boone will be on the lookout.

Luie Boone's Pet Peeve about

Huron, Ohio

There's just so much to love about this vacation destination, but there's one thing that's got Luie Boone's leash in a twist. He woofed:

Huron, Ohio, is right on Lake Erie! I can’t wait to sniff the breeze, splash in the waves, and roll in the sand. Before the trip, my humans read me The Lorax book by Dr. Seuss. The Lorax was a small orange creature who “spoke for the trees” when people started polluting and cutting everything down. In the original book, he even says, “I hear things are just as bad up in Lake Erie.” And he was right. Apparently, way back then, Lake Erie was in big trouble. People were dumping waste and chemicals into the water. Fish were dying, beaches were closed, and the lake smelled awful. It was called a “dead lake.” But people didn’t give up! They cleaned it up, passed laws, and helped the lake recover. Things got so much better that Dr. Seuss later took that line out of the book! Now, I get to visit a lake that was saved because the hoomans cared. So I’ll happily chase the waves, mess up a few sandcastles, and sniff every tree along the shore—because caring isn’t just for humans. Even a dog like me can make a difference, one wag at a time!
