Roaming Rovers Explore California's Russian River

This travel spot is featured in our eighth blog series, Lassies Loved.

Who says vacations are just for humans? California's Russian River offers plenty for four-legged family members to sniff, splash, and explore—from sandy beaches and towering redwoods to a very special treat: a pup picnic! At Dawn Ranch in Guerneville, guests can add a Pup Picnic to their stay, complete with a gourmet meal just for their furry friend. Now that's a vacation worth wagging a tail about!
The Russian River and surrounding Sonoma County communities make it easy to explore, enjoy the outdoors, and spend quality time with your pup. Towering redwoods, winding riverfront roads, vineyard-covered hills, sandy beaches, and the rugged Sonoma Coast create a scenic backdrop for a getaway filled with outdoor adventure, great food, wine, charming small towns, and beautiful scenery. Whether you're paddling along the river, exploring the redwoods, visiting vineyards, enjoying a meal on a patio, or taking in the views along the coast, there are plenty of ways to include your dog in the experience. From the laid-back charm of Guerneville and Monte Rio to the wine-country atmosphere of Healdsburg and Sebastopol and the coastal beauty of Jenner, each destination offers its own way to enjoy a vacation with your four-legged companion.
Guerneville is one of the best-known communities along the Russian River and a natural starting point for a dog-friendly vacation. With your dog by your side, there are plenty of ways to spend the day outdoors, from playing at the dog park to exploring the surrounding redwoods. Bruno Farnocchia Dog Park is a great spot for some off-leash fun, while scenic drives through the towering redwoods give you a chance to enjoy the area's natural beauty together. You can also wander around town, take in the riverfront views, and explore some of the local shops. Just keep in mind that dogs aren't allowed on many dirt hiking trails in California state parks, so be sure to check the rules before heading out. When you're ready to refuel, you won't have to leave your pup behind. Baked on the River offers outdoor seating where you can enjoy breakfast or lunch with your dog by your side. You'll also find other cafes, breweries, and restaurants with outdoor tables around town, making it easy to grab a bite, relax, and keep enjoying the day together.
A short drive east of the river brings you to Healdsburg, where you and your dog can enjoy a mix of wine-country scenery, outdoor activities, and a walkable downtown. Start with some off-leash fun at Villa Chanticleer Dog Park, where your pup can run and play, or head to Badger Park for a leisurely walk and some time outdoors. From there, stroll around Healdsburg's historic plaza with your dog on leash and browse the surrounding shops, galleries, and tree-lined streets. When you're ready to experience wine country, Smith Story Wine Cellars is one dog-friendly option to consider. Dogs are welcome inside the pet-friendly Bacchus Landing property as long as they remain leashed, and if you are lucky the family winery pup, Sir Royal Soup, may greet you upon arrival. Healdsburg also makes it easy to enjoy a meal together. At Willi's Seafood & Raw Bar, your dog can join you at an outdoor table while you enjoy a menu featuring seafood, ceviches, tartares, and Latin-inspired skewers, along with an ever-changing selection of fresh oysters.
Heading south, Sebastopol offers another way to experience the Russian River area, with a mix of farm-to-table dining, local wine and cider, art, shopping, and outdoor recreation. The town's relaxed atmosphere makes it an enjoyable stop for travelers who want to combine time outdoors with good food and local flavor. The Barlow is one of the easiest places to explore with your dog. This outdoor marketplace and gathering space features shops, restaurants, tasting rooms, and open-air areas where you can spend part of the day together. For some more time outdoors, Ives Park, Sebastopol's oldest park, offers walking paths and a peaceful green space in the heart of town where you can take a leisurely stroll with your dog. Afterward, Fido can join you at one of the four outdoor tables at Sebastopol Cookie Company, a dog-friendly eatery. While there isn't a full dog menu, homemade dog treats are available for your pup to enjoy! You can choose from signature cookies, fresh-baked goods, breakfast burritos, sandwiches, soups, smoothies, and more. Fido is also welcome to come inside with you while you place your order.
Heading west, Monte Rio offers a quieter way to experience the Russian River area, with towering redwoods, scenic river views, and the relaxed charm of a historic summer resort town. The community's laid-back atmosphere makes it an enjoyable stop for travelers who want to combine time outdoors with good food and a peaceful place to stay. For some time outdoors with Fido, Monte Rio Riverfront Meadow offers a wide, grassy riverside space where you can take a leisurely stroll, relax, or enjoy a picnic together while taking in views of the Russian River and surrounding redwood-covered hills. Afterward, head to Sarah's Kitchen at Highland Dell, where dogs are welcome on the outdoor deck overlooking the river and you can enjoy hearty German dishes. When it's time to settle in for the night, Casa Secoya offers pet-friendly accommodations among the redwoods, making it a comfortable home base for exploring Monte Rio and the surrounding area.
At the western end of the Russian River, Jenner offers a dramatic change of scenery. This small coastal community sits where the river meets the Pacific Ocean, creating a beautiful landscape of coastal bluffs, beaches, wildlife habitat, and sweeping ocean views. Jenner is an especially appealing destination for dogs and their owners who enjoy scenic drives and outdoor adventures. Nearby Sonoma Coast destinations offer opportunities for leashed walks and beach outings where dogs are permitted, while Stillwater Cove Regional Park is another place to explore. Because Jenner is near sensitive wildlife habitat, it's important to check current rules before visiting beaches, parks, and protected areas with your dog. Leash requirements and dog restrictions can vary by location. For a dog-friendly dining stop, Ocean Cove Lodge Bar & Grill offers a relaxed coastal setting, with the added convenience of a fenced outdoor Doggie Park where Fido can stretch his legs before or after your meal.
One of the best things about exploring the Russian River with your dog is how easily you can experience several different sides of Sonoma County in one trip. Make Guerneville your home base for redwoods and river adventures, head to Healdsburg for wine tasting and shopping, explore Sebastopol's food and farm-country charm, relax along the river in Monte Rio, and finish your trip with scenic drives and Pacific Coast views in Jenner.
Whether you're looking for outdoor adventures, dog-friendly restaurants, pet-friendly places to stay, or simply a beautiful place to slow down together, the Russian River offers plenty of options.
From towering redwoods and riverfront trails to wine-country patios and coastal sunsets, your dog can be part of the adventure from beginning to end.

It features the following amenities:
Riverfront cabin with direct access to the Russian River
Small, peaceful beach area along the river
Surrounded by redwoods
Spacious deck
Outdoor seating (furniture)
Welcomes up to two well-behaved dogs

What would Luie Boone have thought of this rental? He would have woofed:
My humans had planned a vacation for us at Last Resort on the Russian River in California, and I was so excited! I was going to bring my stuffed squirrel, Sally, along with me. As my humans talked about the cabin and read what other guests had said about the place, I heard some very important news: there were squirrels! One pup had even loved watching them. Well, that definitely got my attention. I imagined sitting by the floor-to-ceiling windows with Sally, watching the real squirrels scamper through the trees. I was ready to explore the big yard, follow the trail to the river and beach, sniff the nearby woods, and enjoy all the new smells. The cabin sounded cozy, with a welcoming living room, wood stove, spacious deck, and a kitchen with a large wooden table facing the beautiful trees. My humans could enjoy their meals while Sally and I kept watch for squirrels. I also heard about the beautiful claw-foot bathtub, which seemed to make my humans especially happy. But before we could go, I crossed the Rainbow Bridge. My humans were heartbroken and decided not to take the trip without me. It was supposed to be a family adventure, and without me, it just didn’t feel right. So Last Resort became the vacation we dreamed about but never took. Maybe someday, when my humans see the Russian River, the redwoods, a little squirrel running through the trees, or remember that cozy kitchen and claw-foot tub, they’ll think of me and Sally. They may call it Last Resort, but to me, it will always be my First Choice—the place I dreamed of visiting with my humans, Sally, and all those squirrels I heard so much about.
Paws Venture Here
Luie Boone had sniffed out and dug up these local gems for you to check out while vacationing on California's Russian River!

Blind Beach
Blind Beach on the Sonoma Coast near Jenner is a beautiful place to explore with your dog.
Located just south of where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean, it’s a great stop when exploring the Russian River area and the rugged Sonoma Coast.
Blind Beach is dog-friendly, but dogs should be kept on a leash.
Getting down to the beach is part of the adventure, with a steep and narrow access trail that includes wooden step or ladder-like sections. It can be slippery or uneven, so good shoes and extra care are important. The climb back up can also be tiring, especially for older dogs or anyone with mobility issues.
The ocean is the biggest safety concern. The Sonoma Coast can have powerful surf, strong currents, and unexpected sneaker waves. Never turn your back on the ocean, and keep your dog well away from the water.
The beach is best enjoyed for walking, exploring, and taking in the scenery rather than swimming or wading.
With its dramatic coastline, rocky formations, nearby Russian River, and dog-friendly access, Blind Beach makes for a beautiful coastal adventure.
Just take your time on the steep trail, keep your dog close, and respect the power of the Pacific Ocean.

Russian River Adventures
If you're looking for an adventure you can share with your dog, Russian River Adventures in Healdsburg offers a fun way to experience the Russian River from the water.
Their full-day trip travels about nine miles from Memorial Beach to Wohler Bridge through a quieter stretch of the river.
Dogs are welcome on the full-day trip and can ride in the inflatable canoes, swim, and explore the river's gravel bars and beaches.
Dog life jackets are also available to rent, which is a great option for pups who love the water.
The trip usually takes about three and a half to six hours, depending on how often you stop to swim, relax, and enjoy the scenery.
Along the way, you'll see wildlife, wooded riverbanks, beaches, and peaceful stretches of water.
One important detail for dog owners: dogs are allowed on the full-day trip but not the half-day trip.
So pack some water, snacks, and plenty of energy, and get ready for a memorable day on the Russian River with your best friend.

Lake Benoist Loop
Lake Benoist Loop is a peaceful, mostly flat trail near Healdsburg, California, that makes for an easy outing with your dog.
The loop is about two miles and follows the shoreline of Lake Benoist, offering a relaxing mix of lake views, shady trees, and glimpses of the surrounding Russian River landscape.
Dogs are welcome on leash, making this a nice choice when you want a scenic walk without a strenuous hike.
One interesting fact about the trail is that Lake Benoist is actually a former gravel quarry pit. What was once an area used for gravel extraction has since become a peaceful lake surrounded by vegetation and wildlife.
As you walk, you may see birds and other wildlife around the water, adding a little extra interest to an otherwise easy stroll.
The trail is mostly level, so it's a good option for dogs and people who prefer a gentler walk.
Bring water and waste bags, keep your dog leashed, and take your time enjoying the scenery along the shoreline.
Lake Benoist Loop is a great example of how a former industrial landscape can become a peaceful place to explore. With its easy terrain, water views, and dog-friendly trail, it's a pleasant way to spend some time outdoors near Healdsburg.

One of the fun features for both you and your four-legged companion is the seasonal floating pedestrian bridge, which crosses the Laguna channel and connects the trails on either side. The bridge is removed during the rainy season and returns in spring.
The Laguna is an important wetland and flood-control system, and more than 200 species of birds have been documented throughout the Laguna area.
Your dog will have plenty of new sights and smells to investigate along the way, while you can watch for birds and other wildlife.
For a relaxed dog walk with wetlands, wildlife, open space, and a little bridge adventure, Laguna Wetlands Preserve makes a great Sebastopol stop.

The Sound of Music Overlook
Tucked among the beautiful redwoods near Monte Rio, the Sound of Music Overlook is a scenic stop worth adding to your Russian River adventure.
Reached by the Sound of Music Trail within Monte Rio Redwoods Regional Park & Open Space Preserve, the overlook offers a peaceful place to pause and enjoy the surrounding Sonoma County scenery with your pup.
The preserve has an interesting history, too. In 2025, Sonoma County Regional Parks acquired a large 1,517-acre parcel that expanded the preserve and opened up nearly 30 miles of trails to the public. The trail system, including the Sound of Music Trail, had been built and maintained for decades by local volunteers.
Bring water, keep your pup leashed, and take your time at the overlook.
It’s a beautiful place to pause together, enjoy the redwoods, and soak in the scenery.

Dogs must be kept on leash.

Keep an eye out for ducks paddling along the river, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot signs of bears, such as tracks, in the surrounding area.

HopMonk Tavern is a rustic, 115-year-old stone-and-timber tavern in Sebastopol, complete with an outdoor beer garden and The Abbey, a dedicated live-music venue that hosts performances
throughout the year.
While the name may sound like a traditional religious abbey, The Abbey is actually a separate performance space at the historic tavern.
Dog-friendly, HopMonk welcomes your four-legged companion on its outdoor patio, making it a fun destination for both you and your pup.
The tavern offers live music, an extensive brunch menu, a lively beer garden, and even a dedicated dog menu.
Whether you’re stopping by for brunch, enjoying a drink in the beer garden, catching a show at The Abbey, or simply relaxing with your dog on the patio, HopMonk Tavern offers a welcoming spot to enjoy good food, music, and a lively atmosphere.
Luie Boone's Pet Peeve about
California's Russian River
There's just so much to love about this vacation destination, but there's one thing that would have put Luie Boone's leash in a twist and he would have woofed:
My humans had planned a vacation to California's Russian River, and I was excited about all the exploring I would get to do. I couldn't wait to sniff new trails, splash in the river, investigate the beaches, and discover all the wonderful places my humans had planned for us to visit. Of course, my favorite stuffed squirrel, Sally, was coming with me! She was on of my special sidekick and had been part of so many of my adventures. Then I discovered that the 1996 horror classic Scream, directed by Wes Craven, was filmed in Healdsburg, right there in Sonoma County near the Russian River. The movie was set in the fictional town of Woodsboro, where a masked killer known as Ghostface terrorized the residents. Knowing that a famous horror movie was filmed in Healdsburg, so close to our vacation destination, might have made me think twice about those evening walks! I would have been watching the bushes, listening for strange noises, and keeping Sally close by. Sadly, we never got to take that Russian River vacation because I had crossed the Rainbow Bridge. But I like to think that Sally and I would have explored every trail, splashed in the river, and enjoyed every adventure together. And if we ever heard, “What's your favorite scary movie?” we would have stayed close to our humans and woofed, “Not this one!”
