My humans had booked a stay at The Irish Hills House in San Luis Obispo, and I had already been counting down the days. Perched high above the city, the property sounded incredible, with sweeping views of the ocean, valleys, mountains, Morro Bay, and the Seven Sisters peaks. While my humans were excited about the deck, patio and having a picnic down by the raised garden beds, I was most excited about the animals. Bourbon and Cider, the resident Golden Retrievers, sounded like the kind of dogs every visitor wanted to meet. I was also looking forward to meeting Walter the tortoise, who seemed to be a favorite among guests. Of course, I planned to bring my own travel companions too—Spike, my stuffed turtle, and Walter, my stuffed rabbit. I always thought it was funny that my rabbit shared a name with the famous tortoise we hoped to meet. The property also had chickens, gardens, a koi pond, and plenty of wildlife. Guests often spotted deer, hawks, and other animals while enjoying the quiet surroundings. It sounded like the perfect place for a dog-friendly adventure. Sadly, I never made it to The Irish Hills House. But I still like to imagine my humans there, taking in the views and meeting all the animals, with Spike, Walter, and me right beside them, enjoying every moment together.

There's just so much to love about this vacation destination, but there's one thing that would have put Luie Boone's leash in a twist and he would have woofed:
My humans once planned a trip with me to San Luis Obispo, California, though I never made it there. I still imagine it sometimes—the trails, the wind, and all the new smells.
I first heard about foxtails from another dog at a park when I was younger. He warned me: “Watch out for foxtails.” I didn’t understand then, but I remembered. Foxtails are dry grass seed heads found in places like California during warmer months. They can stick to fur and move deeper into paws, ears, noses, and coats, especially during walks through tall grass. They don’t look like much, but they can cause a lot of discomfort if they’re not noticed. I’ve since passed on, but I hope they still remember what I learned: even small things in the grass can matter a lot.
