Okay, real talk: oysters? Luie Boone has questions. Like, can dogs even eat oysters? (Spoiler: yes, but cooked, no shells, and definitely not the fancy raw ones your humans slurp down with hot sauce). Do dogs want to eat oysters? Debatable. They look like salty rocks and smell like low tide. But apparently, Virginia's River Realm is obsessed with them, so Luie Boone is choosing to be supportive.

For generations, the Chesapeake Bay has produced some of the East Coast's most celebrated oysters, and the region remains deeply connected to that tradition today. In waterfront towns like Urbanna and Irvington, local oyster farms and working docks continue to shape both the economy and the culture. Many restaurants serve oysters harvested just miles away, offering visitors a true taste of the Chesapeake Bay. More than a local specialty, oysters represent the region's connection to the water, its history, and the generations of watermen who have helped define Virginia's River Realm. Luie Boone just wishes they'd make a pupper-friendly version. Shucked and unseasoned, please.

Taking your dog on vacation to Virginia's River Realm is honestly a total vibe. This beautiful region is centered around nine charming small towns filled with waterfront views, quiet streets, outdoor dining, cozy lodging, and plenty of places where dogs are welcome. Whether your pup loves long walks, boat rides, patios, or just vibing in a cottage by the water, the River Realm has something for every tail-wagging traveler. Beyond the nine signature towns, nearby communities like Wake offer even more peaceful places to explore with your pup. Luie Boone gives it four paws up.

Irvington is one of the most elegant stops in the region, but it's also surprisingly dog friendly. The streets around the Rappahannock River front are scenic and totally walkable with your pooch. Bring your dog to the Dog & Oyster Microvineyard & Oyster Bar—and yes, the name is a lot. It was created to honor the rescue dogs that protect the grapes from deer and other grape-loving menaces, plus the oyster itself. They showcase local oyster varieties from multiple farms across Virginia. Luie Boone appreciates the dog representation and appreciates their hardwork to protect the grapes!

Lively offers a slower, more rural pace. Think "quiet luxury," but make it countryside. It's known as the "Gateway to Belle Isle State Park" and the birthplace of Mary Ball Washington (George Washington's mom). Adventure seekers, history buffs, and families looking to touch grass and disconnect will find Lively lives up to its name. Dining options include The World Famous Bar and Grill (THE CORNER!), which boasts the coldest beer in the county and HUGE crab cakes. This dog-friendly, very casual spot is great for grabbing a cold one and some of the best local seafood around. Luie Boone will supervise from under the table.

Kilmarnock is one of the liveliest destinations in the River Realm and a total favorite for dog owners. Town Centre Park is the newest spot to play, with picnics, concerts, something's always happening. For Fido, there's Scottie's Yard dog park, a fully fenced park with separate off-leash areas for small and large dogs, a drinking basin, waste stations, and shaded benches for the humans. Small Town Burger is a dog-friendly stationary food truck where Fido can relax at an outdoor table or Adirondack chair near the firepit. Their menu? Lobster rolls, burgers, hot dogs, fries. They even have a doggo water fountain and cornhole. Luie Boone is manifesting a burger patty and a good game of cornhole!

Saluda is a convenient and comfortable home base for exploring the Middle Peninsula with your pup. Enjoy walks around the historic courthouse grounds or nearby nature trails. For history buffs: Saluda is home to the most decorated Marine ever, Lt. General Lewis "Chesty" B. Puller (the only Marine with five Navy Crosses—he led troops in WWI, WWII, and Korea). Stop at Chad's Dad's BBQ, a husband-and-wife-owned to-go spot serving smoked meats, sides, desserts, and drinks. Think brisket, smoked chicken salad, and good ol' fashioned BBQ. Dogs can join at the outside tables. Luie Boone says BBQ is WAY better than oysters, sorry not sorry.

White Stone is small, scenic, and full of relaxed coastal energy. Fun fact: it's named for the white stones dumped in local creeks by British trading ships back in the colonial era. It's located at the mouth of the mighty Rappahannock River. Bring your four-legged fam to The Tiki Bar & Grill at Windmill Point, which serves great food and drinks plus live music on select weekends. You can also enjoy peaceful waterfront strolls where your pup can stretch their legs while you soak in the river views. Luie Boone is already practicing his "relaxed coastal dog" aesthetic.

Deltaville is literally a dream destination for water-loving dogs. Walk the docks at Safe Harbor Stingray Point Marina, visit Holly Point Nature Park, or explore the grounds at the Deltaville Maritime Museum. Many visitors bring their dogs along for boat rides or dockside hangs. Casual dining option: Deltaville Tap and Raw Bar, where dogs are welcome on the outdoor deck. This pet-friendly, waterfront spot lets you and your pup arrive by land or sea (iconic). The menu features locally inspired seafood, burgers, pasta, salads, and a solid craft beer selection. Luie Boone is lobbying for a doggy paddleboard, and he promises to not fall off it... maybe.

Urbanna is one of the most charming harbor towns in the region and an excellent stop for dog lovers. Enjoy walks at Urbanna Town Marina or stroll historic Cross Street. Check out the adorable LOVE sign at Taber Park with your pup. Visitors are encouraged to take photos and share them on Facebook (yes, people still use Facebook). Urbanna is also home to Virginia's official oyster festival, held annually on the first Friday and Saturday of November. It draws over 50,000 visitors. Luie Boone thinks that's a lot of potential belly rubs.

Topping is a quiet community known for oysters, open landscapes, and easy water access. Explore scenic roads, marsh views, and nearby waterfront areas. A fan favorite for dog owners is Merroir, located right on the banks of the Rappahannock River. It's a quaint oyster and seafood spot offering small plates, wine, and local craft beer. Leashed dogs are welcome in the spacious outdoor seating area. In Topping, you can also enjoy the full experience at a local campground resort that caters to both relaxation and adventure. Luie Boone is here for the balance.

In Tappahannock, relax with your pooch at Marsh Street Beach, a quaint riverside escape. This small beach is perfect for a peaceful dip in the Rappahannock River or a leisurely day by the water. Outdoor dining option: NN Burger Tappahannock, a casual, dog-friendly spot where Fido can join you at an outdoor table. Their menu features award-winning, chef-crafted burgers, sandwiches, salads, and the legendary Freakshake—a milkshake topped with a decadent pastry, whipped cream, sprinkles, chocolate drizzle, served in a candy-coated Mason jar. Ask for their pup cup! Luie Boone is already drooling.

If you want to venture beyond the nine signature towns, Wake offers a peaceful countryside escape with scenic roads, wooded landscapes, and easy access to the waterways that make the River Realm so special. It's a wonderful spot for travelers looking for a slower pace, quiet walks, and a relaxing stay with their dog while remaining close to the rest of the region's attractions. For dog-friendly lodging, Bush Park Camping Resort is a great option.

Virginia's River Realm is genuinely one of the East Coast's most underrated dog-friendly getaways. Every town offers something special for travelers and their four-legged companions. Whether you choose the luxury of Irvington, the peaceful countryside of Lively, the lively streets of Kilmarnock, the quiet comfort of Saluda, the coastal charm of White Stone, the waterfront fun of Deltaville, the harbor beauty of Urbanna, the laid-back oyster country of Topping, or the riverfront convenience of Tappahannock—your dog can be part of every adventure.

From morning walks and patio lunches to scenic drives and sunset strolls, the best vacations are the ones shared together. In Virginia's River Realm, that means wagging tails, happy paws, and unforgettable memories in all nine charming towns—with nearby gems like Wake adding even more to discover.

My hoomans say we are going on vacation to the Virginia’s River Realm and I already know it's going to be a main character moment. We are staying at a vacation home called Topside and I am bringing my stuffed eagle, Iggy, because no great vacation starts without one of your most trusted travel companions. Inside, the home sounds impressive. It's got a mid-century design, spacious rooms, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Carter's Creek. I'm already mapping out sunny spots for naps, cozy corners for lounging, and enough room to carry Iggy from room to room like the honored guest he is. My hoomans are excited about the bedrooms and kitchen (boring). I'm excited about wildlife watching. There's bald eagles, osprey, deer, squirrels, and so much more! Iggy is especially hyped about the eagles; he's always considered himself a bird of great importance, so seeing real ones might be a core memory for him. Outside: pool, huge lawn, private dock, kayaks, paddleboards. My hoomans plan to enjoy the water while I supervise from shore with Iggy safely by my side (he's not a swimmer, but he's excellent emotional support). Best of all? The hosts love dogs. Topside already sounds like the perfect getaway!

Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve

When it comes to natural beauty, there's no shortage here. Hughlett Point has over 200 acres of it to explore with your pup. It contains several excellent examples of tidal and non-tidal wetlands, plus undeveloped beaches, dunes, and upland forests. The preserve supports the federally threatened northeastern beach tiger beetle (rare bug alert!) and other rare invertebrates.

To protect them, some shoreline sections may close during certain times of year—respect that, besties. Hughlett Point is also a major wintering area for migrating waterfowl and songbirds, and provides habitat for bald eagles, osprey, and northern harriers. This secluded paradise on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay has several beautiful dog-friendly walking trails and is free and open to the public. Come check it out with your pup because the scenery and serenity are worth the trip.

Tucked away, this peaceful beach offers visitors and their pups a chance to unwind and enjoy the waterfront without the crowds of bigger tourist spots. The beach is known for its calm waters—great for swimming, wading, and relaxing along the shore.

Many visitors come simply to enjoy the fresh breeze, watch boats pass, or soak in the scenic views. Sunset is especially beautiful here, with colorful skies reflecting across the water. It's also a wonderful spot to bring your dog for a shoreline walk. There's lots of sand to sniff, sea air to breathe, and open space to enjoy. Recent improvements have added new amenities: beach access, parking, and a fishing pier. Whether you're planning a picnic or a peaceful afternoon by the water, this hidden gem offers a laid-back Chesapeake Bay experience for both humans and their four-legged companions.

Deltaville Maritime Museum & Holly Point Nature Park

Founded in 2002, the Deltaville Maritime Museum & Holly Point Nature Park is a local treasure, collecting and exhibiting the rich nautical history of the area known as the "Boatbuilding Capital of the Chesapeake." Not far from where Jamestown explorer John Smith nearly died in a stingray attack (yikes), the museum and grounds encompass 34 acres near Jackson Creek just off the Chesapeake Bay.

At Holly Point Nature Park, don't miss a walk in the woods just past the Boat Shop with your pooch. Unexpected wildlife sculptures guide you down a trail outlined with encore azaleas (blooming spring through fall). Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the walk, but keep all pets on a leash! The museum is more than an indoor boating exhibit. Outside, you'll find winding nature trails, a children's garden (perfect for a puppy), open fields, and docks overlooking Mill Creek. The Woodland Garden is a surprise highlight that will make you pause and enjoy the serenity. Benches donated by patrons dot the landscape for peaceful outings. Bring your family canine for some culture or jam to live music during the museum's "Groovin' in the Park" series. Luie Boone is ready to groove.

Belle Isle State Park

Belle Isle State Park boasts seven miles of spectacular shoreline on the banks of the Rappahannock River. The park covers 733 acres and offers a host of paw-some outdoor activities for you and your dog to enjoy together. Essential reminder: always clean up after your furry friend, and keep your dog under control at all times.

Home to a mix of tidal wetlands, farmland, and upland forest, the park offers diverse environments to explore. Fishing and boating on the river are the biggest draws—canoes, kayaks, and other watercraft are available for hire. If you prefer to explore on foot, Belle Isle has a trail network stretching nearly 10 miles. Most trails are gravel and multi-use, giving you and your canine companion a great opportunity to exercise. Keen birdwatchers love the park for its predator birds. You might spot a blue heron, a hawk, or even a bald eagle. White-tailed deer, turkeys, groundhogs, and a wide range of reptiles and amphibians also call this place home. There are three large picnic shelters available, the biggest accommodating up to 70 people. Want to stay a while? Belle Isle offers lodge accommodation and powered campsites. Dogs are welcome wherever you stay. It's the paw-fect camping getaway with your dog!

Stevie's Ice Cream

Since 2007, Stevie's Ice Cream has served the community of Kilmarnock, VA. This local eatery welcomes dogs to sit with their owners at pet-friendly picnic tables outside while chowing down on a pup cup! Humans can order cold treats like sundaes, milkshakes, ice cream sandwiches, floats, and more. Table service isn't provided. They have a walk-up window, making ordering convenient while Fido stays by your side. Luie Boone says: pup cup or bust.

Luie Boone's Pet Peeve about

 Virginia’s River Realm

There's just so much to love about this vacation destination, but there's one thing that's got Luie Boone's leash in a twist. He woofed:

We are going on vacation to Virginia's River Realm and my stuffed eagle, Iggy, is coming too. He insists he's a dignified explorer. He says he's destined to observe the coast, silently judge seagulls, and remain completely above mud-related behavior. Unfortunately for him, Virginia's River Realm appears to contain an unreasonable amount of marshland. Some dogs might dislike the mud, wet paws, and mysterious marsh smells. I, however, consider this outstanding news. I imagine racing across beaches, splashing through the water, barking at birds, and rolling proudly in marsh mud until I smell like saltwater and victory. Iggy calls this "highly irresponsible behavior," though he admits it looks "emotionally satisfying." But then my hoomans would say the cruelest words a dog can hear: "You need a bath." A bath would erase my masterpiece of sand, marsh perfume, and adventure, replacing it with oatmeal shampoo and disappointment. Iggy fully supports this outcome... for me. He says it's "the unfortunate tax of greatness."
