When Luie Boone overheard his hoomans talking about plans for a vacation to Mackinac Island, Michigan, he could not stop barking. He thinks the island's name should be changed to Barkanic Island. He knows that's not realistic—official name changes take time and lots of effort—but it's the thought that counts!

Mackinac Island offers a refreshing escape from not just the noise of everyday life, but from the rustle and bustle of cars. Located on Lake Huron, nestled between Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas, it is famously-known for its charming Victorian architecture, scenic beauty, horse-drawn carriages, and world-class fudge. Luie Boone, unfortunately, knows that he can't have any fudge, but he knows that his hoomans will absolutely love taste-testing every variety.

What many travelers don’t realize about Mackinac Island, however, is that it’s one of the most dog-friendly destinations in the Midwest. Seriously! Getting to the island with a dog is easy and enjoyable. There are several ferry lines, including Sheplers and Star Line, which both welcome dogs aboard at no extra charge. That's right—pups cruise for free... and, maybe, they can even become captain of the vessel. Dogs are allowed on the open-air decks, as long as they are leashed. The ferry ride itself is a scenic prelude to the adventure ahead, with gorgeous views of the Straits of Mackinac and the iconic Mackinac Bridge.

Once on the island, the accommodations are plentiful for travelers with dogs. Mission Point Resort is one standout. This spot offers a “Pooch at the Point” program, which includes a doggy welcome bag, easy access to trails, and grassy areas. Other accommodation options, such as the Park Place Suites and the Sunset Condos, also cater to dog owners looking for comfortable, convenient places to stay. As always, it’s best to call ahead to confirm the accommodation's pet dog policies, especially if you’re traveling with a larger breed. Luie Boone, at 80 pounds, personally wouldn't consider himself large, but who knows?

Life on Mackinac Island moves at a slower, more peaceful pace, and that’s part of what makes it so enjoyable for dogs. With motor vehicles banned, the island’s main form of transportation is by foot, bike, or horse-drawn carriage. This makes exploring with your dog far less stressful than in more crowded, car-heavy destinations. The paved 8.2-mile trail that circles the island is perfect for long walks with your pup. It offers gorgeous views of Lake Huron, the limestone bluffs, and the occasional wildflower meadow! Luie Boone will definitely have to stop to sniff every single flower.

For more adventurous outings, consider visiting Mackinac Island State Park. This state park covers more than 80% of the island, and it is open to your pup. There are winding forest trails, which lead to beautiful natural landmarks, such as the Arch Rock and Sugar Loaf. The quieter paths offer plenty of space for dogs to relax, sniff, and explore. The park is exceptionally well-maintained, and you’ll find plenty of scenic spots for a break or a picnic along the way.

Dining on Mackinac Island is also dog-friendly, particularly during the warmer months when patios are open. Several restaurants offer outdoor seating where dogs are welcome, including some local favorites like the Chuckwagon, the Doghouse, and Boxwood Café. It’s not uncommon to see dogs lounging beside their owners under shady umbrellas, while the tasty smells of fudge and grilled whitefish fills the air! Yum, yum, yum!

Marquette Park is a place worth checking out—and, no, Luie Boone it is not named after Marquette University, which is the college that your hooman sister attended. This park is located at the base of Fort Mackinac. With it's wide open lawns and views of the harbor, it’s ideal for a picnic, a nap, or a leisurely game of fetch. Who doesn't love fetch?

To make the most of your trip, be sure to bring a few essentials. Luie Boone, with the help of his hoomans, recommends a sturdy leash, waste bags, plenty of water, and perhaps a lightweight blanket or towel. The weather can change quickly on the island, especially near the shoreline, so packing a sweater or rain jacket for yourself can come in handy. Luie Boone will make sure his hoomans pack his bright orange jacket. It'll keep him warm and dry if it were to rain.

The slower pace, beautiful trails, friendly locals, and outdoor lifestyle of Mackinac Island creates an ideal setting for a memorable getaway. Whether you’re hiking through shaded woods, sitting on a sun-drenched patio, or simply strolling through town, you’ll find that everything about the island invites you and your dog to enjoy every moment together.

What does Luie Boone think of this rental? He woofed:

Barkinac Island... I mean, Mackinac Island, Michigan has this gorgeous, historic cottage called Cross Trees. It's where we would stay if we visited. The cottage was built in 1891. It is full of old smells and hidden corners to sniff. Sitting high on the East Bluff of Mackinac Island State Park, it has a view that makes the hoomans say, "Woah," and causes the doggies to bark wild. As Mackinac Island is surrounded by water and has no bridge connecting it to the mainland, visitors arrive by a ferry boat. I love a good boat ride with the lake air sifting into my snout, the wind causing my ears to flap, and the water splashing into my fur. Once we arrive, it'll be nice to relax on the wrap-around porch of the cottage. You know what's great about Mackinac Island? There's no cars; there's just bikes, horses, and wagons. I cannot wait to meet some horses and become their friends.

Arch Rock

Arch Rock is a natural bridge that defies gravity, as it is more than 140 feet above the waters of Lake Huron! Wow, that's high! Luie Boone wonders what would happen if he did a cannonball from that height... his hoomans say it would be not good. The trip to view Arch Rock features an easy and quick stroll through the woods and along a paved trail. It ends at a nice platform overlooking the interesting rocky formation.

Mackinac Island Carriage Tours offers horse and carriage tours, which your best friend is welcome to join you on. If your furry friend is a lap dog, they ride for free. Large dogs are allowed at the price of a child ticket. Who's to say a large dog can't be a lap dog? Luie Boone wouldn't mind plopping his rump on one of his hooman's laps and get real comfy.

Here, you can take your pup down to the beach to cool their feet. There is a strong current here, so swimming isn't allowed for the hoomans or for the dogs. There is a food shack there called The Doghouse!

Fort Mackinac

Take a tour with your pup of Fort Mackinac, which served as a home for soldiers and their families. It eventually became the headquarters for Mackinac National Park. A water bowl for pups is located adjacent to the front entrance. Please note that there may be both Cannon and Rifle firing demonstrations during your visit. If your dog is not a big fan of loud noises, like Luie Boone, please be sure to exercise caution and watch your pooch for any stress.

Sanders On Mackinac

At this spot, you can treat yourself to a sweet selection of ice cream, chocolates, fudge, and more. They do not serve a full dog menu, but Fido is welcome to join you inside for a pup cup! Luie Boone reckons those two big hounds need at least five more pup cups.

Luie Boone's Pet Peeve about

Mackinac Island, Michigan

There's just so much to love about this vacation destination, but there's one thing that's got Luie Boone's leash in a twist. He woofed:

Mackinac Island has no cars, just horses, bikes, trails, and squirrels. It sounded absolutely perfect, until I heard about the fudge. Apparently, Mackinac Island is famous for this sweet, melty treat. My hoomans cannot stop talking about trying every single flavor. There's chocolate, maple, peanut butter, and even sea salt caramel. They mentioned a "fudge crawl," and I was flabbergasted. I've been crawling for snacks my whole life and never once got any fudge. I'm not allowed any fudge, not a bite, not even a crumb that hits the floor. My hoomans say chocolate is toxic and that sugar is really bad for dogs. That's not fair, especially because there's peanut butter fudge. Peanut butter, that's one of my favorite things! So, while my hoomans run around with sticky fingers and sugar highs, I'll be a polite pup. I might be drooling and begging, but I won't get any fudge. Whatever! I'm sure my hoomans will find a unique, tasty, dog-friendly treat that I can try!
