So here's the thing about Lake Superior: it has opinions. Luie Boone's hoomans keep telling him it's the biggest fresh water lake in the world, but he's pretty sure they're just saying that because they've never seen his water bowl after a particularly aggressive drinking session. Munising has a few natural surprises that can feel almost strange because of how powerful and unpredictable Lake Superior is. Along Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, the lake can shift quickly from calm to rough when weather changes, catching visitors off guard. In winter, waves freezing against the cliffs create ice caves and formations that look almost unreal—like frozen tunnels and pillars along the shoreline. At times, temperature differences over the water can even cause mirages that distort the horizon. Nothing supernatural; just nature in Munising acting in dramatic and unexpected ways. Luie Boone is already planning to keep all four paws firmly on solid ground, thank you very much. He respects a lake that could theoretically swallow a small car!
Munising, Michigan is one of those rare destinations where rugged natural beauty meets small-town charm. And even better, it's a place you can genuinely enjoy with your dog by your side. Tucked along the southern shore of Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Munising serves as the gateway to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, a stunning stretch of colorful cliffs, forests, waterfalls, and beaches that make for an unforgettably dog-friendly adventure. Luie Boone has already started practicing his "rugged" face. It looks a lot like his "someone is holding a treat" face, which is to say, very focused.
Traveling with your dog here is surprisingly easy as long as you plan around pet-friendly areas. Within Pictured Rocks, dogs are welcome in several scenic spots provided they are on a leash. Sand Point Beach is a favorite for peaceful walks along Lake Superior, where your dog can splash in the water and roam the shoreline. Munising Falls is another great stop, offering a short and accessible paved trail that leads to a beautiful waterfall. It's perfect if you're looking for something quick and easy. Miners Castle and Miners Beach provide some of the most iconic views in the area, and both allow leashed pets, making them ideal for soaking in the scenery without leaving your dog behind. Luie Boone plans to give each waterfall a thorough sniff inspection. For science.
Beyond the national lakeshore, the Munising area is filled with opportunities to explore. The region is known for its abundance of waterfalls, many of which are just a short walk from the road, so you and your pup can easily visit multiple spots in a single day. If your dog enjoys being on the water, some local outfitters offer boat or pontoon rentals that allow pets, giving you a unique perspective of Lake Superior's vastness. Even a simple walk through town or along the shoreline can feel like an adventure thanks to the fresh air and peaceful surroundings. Finding a place to stay with your dog is relatively straightforward. If you prefer being close to nature, Munising Tourist Park Campground is a standout option where dogs can stay with you right along the lakeshore, creating a relaxing and scenic home base for your trip. Luie Boone is a big fan of any lodging that comes with immediate access to new smells.
When it comes to dining, Munising has a handful of welcoming spots where your dog can join you, typically on outdoor patios. BPyGeorge Brewing Co. offers a laid-back atmosphere with craft beer and dog-friendly seating outside. You can grab a bite to eat from Drift Wood Deli, which is conveniently connected to the brewery. For something quick and fun, Toby's Dog House is a local favorite perfect for a morning coffee stop—sometimes even offering treats just for your pup (Toby's clearly understands the assignment). Luie Boone thinks any establishment with "dog" in the name is legally obligated to give him free snacks. He will be testing this theory.
Falling Rock Cafe & Bookstore rounds things out with a cozy vibe and outdoor seating where dogs are welcome. The Falling Rock Cafe brings customers freshly roasted coffees from around the world with the help of their sister business, the Great Lakes Coffee Company. Luie Boone bets his hooman Dad will try each and every coffee.
A trip to Munising with your dog does come with a few things to keep in mind. Leash rules are strictly enforced in national park areas, and it's important to respect wildlife and the natural environment. Bringing plenty of water, snacks, and waste bags will make your outings smoother, especially since amenities can be spread out. With a bit of preparation, though, the experience is incredibly rewarding. What makes Munising special is how effortlessly it combines adventure and relaxation. You can spend your mornings hiking to waterfalls, your afternoons lounging by Lake Superior, and your evenings unwinding at a quiet patio—all with your dog right there with you. It's not just a pet-friendly destination; it's a place where traveling with your dog feels natural, easy, and genuinely enjoyable. Luie Boone gives this a rating of four paws and one very damp nose from all the lake sniffing.

What does Luie Boone think of this rental? He woofed:
This beach house called Sunrise Beach sounds like my kind of place. Ten acres to explore, a paved driveway for zoomies, and a back door that opens right onto the sand. No waiting, just straight to the beach, which I fully plan to sprint across immediately. I've heard from other dogs who've stayed there, and they said it's the real deal — soft sand, clear water, colorful rocks, and tons of space to run and splash. They even made friendly beach-walking buddies and said it's not often you find a place this nice that truly welcomes dogs. Inside sounds just as good: big open space for zoomies, soft carpet for rolling, smooth floors for sliding, and multiple big beds I'll need to test (thoroughly). There's also a screened-in porch for keeping watch and a lakeside fire pit where I can relax after a long day, hopefully while catching the occasional snack drop. One very important detail: Munising is right in the heart of black bear country. Real bears. Big ones. The kind my hoomans say we "respect from a distance," so I'll be on very serious patrol duty. But don't worry! I'm bringing my own bear. His name is Bear Bear. He is a brown stuffed friendly fella, and he'll be joining me for beach runs, naps, and standing guard. If we do see a real bear, we'll handle it by going inside and supervising from a safe distance. Beach runs, exploring, watching for bears (real and stuffed), and sticking by my hoomans.
Paws Venture Here
Luie Boone sniffed out and dug up these local gems for you to check out while vacationing in Munising, Michigan!

Seaberg Pontoon Rentals
Explore the stunning Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Grand Island at your own pace. Discover breathtaking views, including lighthouses, shipwrecks, sandy beaches, waterfalls, and more. Dogs are welcome, so bring your furry friend along for the adventure. Seaberg Pontoon Rentals is open daily (weather permitting) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, offering both half-day and full-day rentals.
Cruise along the shoreline and take in the beauty of Pictured Rocks, then make your way to Grand Island on the return trip to visit the historic Grand Island East Channel Lighthouse. Be sure to keep an eye out for baby eagles as you head toward Murray Bay, where you can float above the SS Bermuda shipwreck. It's incredible to think this vessel has been resting there for over 130 years: just 12 feet below the surface and visible right from your boat.

Wagner Falls Scenic Site
Wagner Falls Scenic Site is located just 1.5 miles south of Munising. A 0.1-mile packed-gravel trail and boardwalk with a few stairs leads from a small parking area to an observation platform overlooking Wagner Falls (0.25 miles round-trip). Luie Boone appreciates a short walk with a big payoff. Waterfalls are nature's way of saying "good job for walking here."
There are no restrooms and no water, so please plan accordingly. Dogs are welcome but must always be on a 6-foot leash and under an owner's immediate control. All pet waste must be properly disposed of in trash receptacles.

Miners Castle Rock
Miners Castle Rock is a striking and dog-friendly spot that's just a short walk from the parking lot — perfect for a quick outing with your pup. A paved, wheelchair-accessible path leads to the iconic upper viewpoint, making it easy for both people and leashed dogs to enjoy the scenery together.
For a bit more adventure, you and your dog can head to a lower viewpoint via a steeper path with stairs. Parts of the trail include boardwalks, adding variety to your walk, and this is one of the few shoreline areas where dogs are welcome.
From the upper viewing deck near the parking area, you'll be treated to incredible views of Lake Superior, along with sights of Miners Castle and Grand Island. The first overlook is fully wheelchair-accessible, so it's a great option for a relaxed, pet-friendly stroll with beautiful views. Luie Boone thinks the name "Miners Castle" sounds very fancy. He will be pretending he is royalty during this entire visit: King Luis Boone.

Sand Point Beach
This beautiful beach is a favorite for both visitors and locals. And it's even better if you're bringing your dog along. It's a perfect place to relax, take a stroll, and catch a stunning sunset together. Sand Point Beach has been named one of the "Top Five Summer Beaches in America," and once you're there, it's easy to understand why.
The soft white sand, peaceful atmosphere, and wide-open space make it ideal for both people and pups to enjoy. It's a great spot for a leisurely walk in the evening, especially as the sun sets over the bay. The shallow water tends to be a bit warmer than other nearby lakeshore areas, which makes it especially inviting for a quick splash—yes, even for your dog. Leashed dogs are welcome on the beach and in the water, so your four-legged companion doesn't have to miss out on the fun.
If you're feeling adventurous, small boats can be easily carried from the parking lot and launched right from the shore. With scenic views of the bay, nearby islands, and a charming lighthouse in the distance, this beach offers a relaxing, dog-friendly escape that truly has it all. Luie Boone is already planning his dramatic sunset silhouette photo. Bear Bear will be in the background, providing emotional support.

Horseshoe Falls & Gift Shop
Nestled in the charming town of Munising, Michigan, you'll find Horseshoe Falls. This 20-foot beauty is a spring-fed wonder, cascading into a crystal-clear pond teeming with over 200 rainbow trout. Bring Fido to Horseshoe Falls & Gift Shop. The pet-friendly attraction invites two- and four-legged friends to browse the quirky gift shop, have a picnic lunch under the sun, and explore the grounds, which feature a trail leading to the waterfall and a pond filled with rainbow trout. Feed the friendly fish. Children under 12 can even participate in a gnome scavenger hunt. It's privately owned, but don't let that deter you: the owners have created a magical experience for visitors. Luie Boone is very interested in the trout. Not to eat (probably). Just to observe. Intensely.

Miners Falls
Miners Falls is located in Munising within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. This is probably the most accessible of the waterfalls of Pictured Rocks. A short and easy 0.6-mile walk takes you and your pup from the parking lot and winds through the woods to enjoy this 50-foot waterfall cascading over a sandstone cliff. And if you're up for the 64 steps, you can get even closer from the lower platform. Short, sweet, and absolutely stunning. A seasonal vault toilet is at the parking lot. Luie Boone counted the steps in his head and got tired. But he's willing to try.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
Along forty miles of Lake Superior, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a dog-friendly spot in Munising that puts the glory of nature's ever-changing scenery on display every season. Ensure you and Fido head out to Sable Falls or Miners Beach. Your pup is permitted along roads and in designated developed visitor facility areas but not in fields or the backcountry.
On trails, dogs must be kept on a leash, six feet or shorter, at all times. Remember that the only one who will clean up after your dog is YOU. Pet waste left on trails or near water sources contaminates clean water and endangers wildlife by possibly introducing them to diseases and parasites. Practice Leave No Trace principles to protect this beautiful park. Luie Boone is a big believer in leaving a place nicer than you found it. Also in finding snacks. But mostly the first thing.

Rustic Grounds Coffee Co.
Rustic Grounds Coffee Co. in Munising is very dog friendly. A charming seasonal coffee trailer that delights visitors and their pups each summer. This vintage-inspired trailer is loved for its friendly service and exceptional beverages. Bring Fido along to nibble on a pup cup from their partial dog menu at one of the tables available to two- and four-legged visitors outside this local coffee trailer.
Their menu features classic cafe options like baked goods, smoothies, coffee, and energy drinks. Guests rave about the delicious hot campfire s'mores coffee and the refreshing iced vanilla lattes. Unique offerings like bubble tea and fizzy summer drinks cater to families, while tasty treats like waffles add a delightful touch. With a cozy atmosphere and a punch card reward system, every visit feels special. Rustic Grounds is a must-visit gem for coffee lovers and their furry friends eager for a unique experience. Luie Boone doesn't drink coffee (it's not for dogs, his hoomans say), but he is very interested in the pup cup situation. Very interested.
Luie Boone's Pet Peeve about
Munising, Michigan
There's just so much to love about this vacation destination, but there's one thing that's got Luie Boone's leash in a twist. He woofed:
In Munising, I can already imagine running through the sand, sniffing new smells, and feeling like I've got a whole world to explore. The first thing I'll probably want to do is dig. The sand looks soft and perfect for it, and I might get carried away trying to make a big hole or even a tunnel. From my point of view, it just feels like fun and adventure. But here's where things get tricky. I've heard that park officials, including the National Park Service that manages Pictured Rocks, warn that sand tunnels are dangerous because they can collapse suddenly and trap people or animals. I would not realize I was in danger if that happened. I would just be having the time of my life, paws flying, sand spraying everywhere, and then suddenly: disaster! So, even though I'll be excited, my hoomans will need to help me keep my digging shallow so I can stay safe and still enjoy the trip. It's a total buzzkill, honestly. A dog just wants to dig. But I guess I also want to not be trapped under a mountain of sand. So fine. Shallow holes only. Bear Bear thinks this is a reasonable compromise. Bear Bear is very wise.
