Luie Boone, we know you tried to secure a name change, but Montauk is always going to be called Montauk, New York. Not Montpawk, not Snifftauk, and definitely not Bone-tauk. Always Montauk.
In all seriousness, Montauk, New York, is an ideal destination for visitors and their furry friend. It is situated at the eastern tip of Long Island, offering a relaxed, small-town vibe that’s very welcoming to dogs. As a somewhat less crowded and less restrictive beach town, Montauk embraces four-legged visitors with open arms, making it a fantastic spot for pups to enjoy the outdoors alongside their humans. From sandy shores to scenic trails and pet-friendly restaurants, Montauk ensures that dogs and their owners will both have an amazing vacation.
The dog-friendly beaches of Montauk are one of the town's biggest draws for dog owners looking to take their furry friend on vacation. The Montauk Dog Beach, which is located near Hither Hills State Park, is a favorite place. It's where dogs can run off-leash and splash in the waves to their heart’s content. The energy and the joy that you’ll see there is contagious. Plus, it’s a great place for your pup to socialize and get some exercise.
If you prefer hiking or more nature-focused adventures, Montauk offers plenty of trails where dogs are welcome. One popular trail is the clutter of Shadmoor State Park trails. These paths wind through picturesque landscapes, offering stunning views of the ocean. A trip here will make every walk a rewarding experience for both you and your dog. Please remember to keep your pooch leashed and be sure to carry fresh water for both of you!
When it comes to accommodations, Montauk has no shortage of dog-friendly places to stay! There are a few boutique, dog-friendly hotels, such as the Montauk Beach House. This accommodation offers pet-friendly amenities and a welcoming environment. If you're keener for a cozy rental—a spot where your best friend can feel right at home—you’ll find plenty of options that cater to pups! Luie Boone talks about a beachfront rental called the Surfside Classic below. Having a comfortable, dog-friendly place to rest after a day of exploration is key to a stress-free vacation.
Montauk also shines with its dog-friendly dining scene. Many restaurants have outdoor patios. These are spots your dog can join you, as you enjoy fresh seafood and other local specialties. The Surf Lodge is one popular spot. It's known for its lively atmosphere and dog-friendly outdoor seating. Another great option is the Harvest on Fort Pond, which is where you can savor farm-to-table meals!
To make the most of your trip, it’s important to come prepared. Be sure to pack your dog’s essentials, including food, toys, leashes, waste bags, and plenty of water! Always keep an eye on local leash laws and beach rules, so that you can ensure your visit stays enjoyable and respectful for everyone.
Please make yourself aware of the following: Montauk's weather can be unpredictable—often windy or a bit chilly—so it can be a good idea to bring a jacket for your dog to keep them comfortable. When heading to the beach, be mindful of hot sand, which can burn sensitive paws. A quick "hand-test" by pressing your palm against the sand for a few seconds will tell you if it's safe; if it's too hot for you, then it's too hot for your pup. The same goes for pavement during walks. Some areas around Montauk do have rough terrain, so consider using booties to protect your dog's paws. They might walk a little funny at first, but it's worth it for their safety. Also, don't forget about those pesky pests! Fleas, ticks, and other bugs can always be a concern, so make sure your dog is protected with appropriate treatments before exploring the outdoors.
All in all, Montauk offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, relaxed charm, and dog-friendly hospitality. Whether you’re spending your days on the beach, hiking scenic trails, or dining on outdoor patios, Montauk welcomes you and your dog with open arms. It’s a place where you can make wonderful memories together and enjoy a truly tail-wagging vacation!

What does Luie Boone think of this rental? He woofed:
Have you heard of the Surfside Classic? I have! It's an oceanfront retreat in Montauk, New York. Since hearing about it, I’ve been wagging my tail so hard that I might need a chiropractor! From what I’ve overheard, it’s got four bedrooms, four-and-a-half bathrooms (yes, four-and-a-half —don’t ask why a house needs that many toilets when I’m perfectly happy with the lawn), a private heated pool, an outdoor shower, and private beach access! That means endless sand sprints, world-record holes in the sand, and maybe chasing a seagull or two (don’t worry, I’ll never catch them—they’re basically flying comedians). Inside? Total tail-wagger: a sunroom for naps, ocean views from every window, “chic interiors” that my humans swoon over, and a “chef-worthy” kitchen full of delicious smells. There’s even a game room, though I’m still working out how to play foosball without chewing the ball. From sunrise coffee on the deck to sunset BBQs under the stars, it’s shaping up to be pure coastal luxury!

Walking Dunes Trail
This is a 3/4-mile trail, which leads you in a loop. The trail offers a unique hiking experience through a dynamic landscape of shifting parabolic dunes, with some reaching up to 80 feet in height! Luie Boone needs to scale one of those, so he can be super-duper tall and get all the best sniffs.

Ditch Plains Beach
The Ditch Plains Beach features a sandy shoreline, which is backed by cliffs that offer picturesque views. The amenities here include restrooms, outdoor showers, and food trucks. That's got Luie Boone excited! The smell of the water and food—that's heaven for pups like him. One of the popular food trucks is the Ditch Witch, which serves a variety of beachside cuisine. Adjacent to the beach is Rheinstein Park. This park provides hiking trails with scenic vistas that your doggo will enjoy!

Shadmoor State Park
This state park is 99-acres. It features more than 2,400 feet of ocean beach, which can be accessed by two stairways! It has bluffs, freshwater wetlands that are part of the preserve, and hiking trails to stroll on with your pup. There are elevated platforms, which are ideal for birdwatching and enjoying the shoreline views!

Kirk Park Beach
Kirk Park Beach is a picturesque and pooch-friendly destination located in Montauk. It is an ideal spot for those seeking a relaxed beach experience without all of the crowds. The beach is known for its accessibility with its ADA-accessible restrooms. A vehicular beach access with a permit is required. Overall, this beach is a popular spot for swimming, surfing, picnicking, and enjoying food trucks!

Hither Hills State Park
This state park offers visitors and their pups scenic picnic areas and a sandy ocean beach. There are hiking and nature trails, which are available to explore. Luie Boone can't wait to enjoy the view, just like that pooch is!

Montauk County Park offers outer beach access, outer beach camping, hiking, and canoeing. For your safety, hiking is temporarily closed each year from early January through January 31 during shotgun hunting season. Please note that kite flying is not permitted on Montauk Outer Beach due to the proximity to Montauk Airport.

John's Drive-In
This is a casual fast food-style eatery, which serves up a variety of delicious American classics. You can choose from menu options, including burgers, sandwiches, wraps, chicken, seafood, ice cream, and more. Be sure to order your pup their own ice cream! Luie Boone, personally, would appreciate two cups, or three, or even ten.
Luie Boone's Pet Peeve about
Montauk, New York
There's just so much to love about this vacation destination, but there's one thing that's got Luie Boone's leash in a twist. He woofed:
A vacation to Montauk means car rides, new smells, and maybe even a bite of a cheeseburger... if I play my cards right. But then I found out the truth: Montauk is at the very, very, very end of Long Island, New York. The very tip! After that? There's nothing. No grass. No trees. No hydrants. Just the vast, terrifying, bone-swallowing Atlantic Ocean. Basically, it’s where the Earth runs out. And they expect me to go there?! One bad fetch throw and I’ll be paddling to Portugal. One zoomie in the wrong direction and, poof, all of a sudden, I’m a sea dog. The waves here also crash like giant paws, and the seagulls scream like they own the place! Still, part of me is curious. There’s sand for digging, air so salty it tickles your whiskers, and a huge lighthouse that looks like it’s keeping an eye on the edge of the universe. So, I guess I’ll go. I’ll just have to sniff bravely and bark dramatically at the waves. But I’m telling you now, I’m keeping four paws on solid ground, because Montauk isn’t just a vacation spot… it’s the cliffhanger at the end of the world.
