This travel spot is featured in our fifth blog series, Bowwows Belong.

Vacationing with your dog on North Carolina’s Brunswick Islands is basically Luie Boone’s dream scenario. Forty five miles of coastline. Five separate barrier islands. Unlimited sand. He heard the words salty breeze and immediately started packing emotionally. The Brunswick Islands include Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle Beach, Holden Beach, Oak Island including Caswell Beach, and Bald Head Island. Luie Boone has already decided he intends to supervise all of them.
Sunset Beach is the southernmost and has wide, peaceful shoreline that feels made for dramatic sunrise strutting. Near Bird Island Reserve, you and your leashed pup can wander past tidal creeks and dunes toward the Kindred Spirit Mailbox. Humans leave heartfelt notes inside. Luie Boone believes this is an excellent place to leave a written request for more treats. The undeveloped stretch of beach makes it feel quiet and wild, and when the sun sets in soft pinks and golds, he fully expects applause for simply existing in that lighting.
Ocean Isle Beach brings a bit more energy. Mornings can start with a beach walk, before kayaking along the Intracoastal Waterway or visiting the Ocean Isle Beach Pier. The pier grill serves breakfast all day, which Luie Boone finds deeply reassuring. Eggs, biscuits, pancakes. He hears breakfast and assumes participation. While the hoomans might visit the Museum of Coastal Carolina, he suggests guarding the rental and testing the structural integrity of the couch cushions instead.
Holden Beach is where Luie Boone plans to perfect the art of doing absolutely nothing. Known for being one of the quietest beaches in the state, it's ideal for slow shoreline walks and serious shell inspections. Bridgeview Park offers water views and open space for polite sniffing. Luie Boone's hoomans have chosen a rental here, and he has already begun drafting his official review in his head.
Oak Island, including Caswell Beach, offers the most variety. There are public beach access points, parks, marsh overlooks, and the Oak Island Pier. The pier has a legendary reputation for king mackerel fishing, with more than 250 kings reportedly reeled in annually. Luie Boone does not fish, but he does support any activity that results in seafood being present. He will supervise from a safe, non slippery distance.
Bald Head Island might be his favorite conceptually because it is largely car free. You arrive by ferry and get around by bicycle or golf cart. Fewer cars means fewer interruptions to important sniff based investigations. The historic Old Baldy Lighthouse anchors the island, and miles of maritime forest and beach provide excellent exploring conditions. JULES’ Salty Grub & Island Pub at the marina offers waterfront dining and a Fido friendly deck. Luie Boone appreciates a restaurant that understands harbor views are better with a dog present.
Across all five islands, dogs are generally allowed on the beaches, though leash rules and seasonal restrictions apply, especially during sea turtle nesting season. Luie Boone supports responsible beach citizenship. He will bring water, tolerate towel drying, and refrain from interrogating turtles. Spike, his plush turtle, says he has to.
The Brunswick Islands deliver the kind of coastal escape where days unfold slowly and paws stay sandy. Whether it is sunset walks, pier breakfasts, quiet shell hunts, or ferry rides to car free shores, this stretch of North Carolina coast understands something important. A beach trip is better when there is a slightly windblown dog standing in the foreground, pretending he planned it all.

What does Luie Boone think of this rental? He woofed:
I haven’t personally set paw at King of the Sea yet, but I’ve already begun mentally preparing my zoomies. The canine grapevine has been buzzing. I received verified intel at the dog park, cross-checked it at the groomer, and finalized confirmation during a very official sidewalk sniff summit. Consensus: this oceanfront cottage on Holden Beach in North Carolina’s Brunswick Islands is elite pup property. Reports say the shoreline is wide enough for full speed sprints without awkward traffic. The covered oceanside porch is apparently prime napping headquarters, complete with wave soundtrack included. Inside, the living area overlooks seagrass and open ocean, with big windows designed specifically for professional bird surveillance. I'll be monitoring pelicans. They know what they did. There’s a short boardwalk through the dunes that leads straight to the sand. No long commute. Immediate beach access. That’s efficient planning. After brave wave-chasing assignments, there’s both a covered and uncovered outdoor shower ready for sandy paw debriefing. Inside, the beds are made on arrival, which I assume means less hooman chaos. The kitchen is fully equipped for snack operations, and every bedroom has its own bathroom, which makes my hoomans disproportionately excited for reasons I don't fully understand. Why don't they just do their business outside like me?
Paws Venture Here
Luie Boone sniffed out and dug up these local gems for you to check out while vacationing on North Carolina’s Brunswick Islands!

Kindred Spirit Mailbox
Kindred Spirit Mailbox on Sunset Beach is one of those quietly magical places that feels bigger than a simple walk in the sand. Tucked into the dunes near Bird Island Reserve, the mailbox invites visitors to leave handwritten notes, reflections, and hopes, while also reading messages from strangers who felt moved to share a piece of their story. Luie Boone will be leaving a note requesting more treats, more walks, and... uh, even more treats!
The walk out is part of the experience, with wide ocean views, rolling dunes, and the steady rhythm of waves guiding the way. The pooch friendly trail makes it easy to bring your leashed pup along for the journey. Beyond the stretch of beach, the path loops around the dunes, offering a glimpse into the island’s fragile coastal ecosystem. Sea oats, tidal creeks, and shorebirds create a peaceful backdrop that encourages slowing down. It's a beautiful blend of natural scenery!

TourH2O
TourH2O is exactly the kind of operation Luie Boone believes should exist everywhere. Dog friendly pontoon and kayak tours around Bald Head Island, Southport, Oak Island, Holden Beach, Ocean Isle Beach, and Sunset Beach? That is elite nautical planning. Luie has already volunteered as onboard morale officer... or he can be Capitan Luie Boone, he's always willing to take charge.
On the pontoon option, a USCG licensed captain handles the navigating while Luie Boone would handle horizon scanning and breeze appreciation. He considers himself highly qualified for sitting at the front of the boat with ears flapping in a dignified manner. If kayaking through quiet creeks and estuaries is more your speed, he supports that too, though he would prefer not to be personally responsible for paddling... or be held responsible for tipping the kayak over. Gliding through calm waterways while monitoring for suspicious splashes feels like a very respectable coastal assignment. Boat days are better when there is a windblown dog pretending he is in charge!

Old Baldy Lighthouse
Old Baldy Lighthouse stands proudly on Bald Head Island as the oldest, still standing lighthouse in North Carolina. Its story begins with the original Bald Head Lighthouse built in 1794, which was later taken down in 1813. Rather than starting from scratch, builders reused the original bricks and lantern to construct the current tower in 1816 under the direction of Daniel Way. The structure reflects centuries of coastal navigation history and the constant effort to guide ships safely.
Today, visitors can enjoy the grounds with their leashed pups, taking in the picnic tables, open lawn, historic Oil House, and interpretive signs that explain the lighthouse’s past. A sprawling live oak tree adds to the charm of the setting, its branches stretching wide as if it has been quietly observing the island for generations. Luie Boone respects any building that has survived this long and assumes the lighthouse, much like him, has seen a lot and remains unbothered.

Ocean Isle Beach Nature Trail
Ocean Isle Beach Nature Trail is the kind of place where Luie Boone would immediately slow his pace and activate full observation mode. The path is mostly raised boardwalk with occasional sandy stretches, winding gently through scenic marshland that feels calm but very much alive. It’s an easy walk, flat and accessible, with multiple entry points that connect back to nearby neighborhoods, making it a simple out and back adventure for families and leashed pups.
Wildlife is part of the experience here. Frogs, anoles, fiddler crabs, snails, deer, and a wide variety of birds all call the marsh home. Luie Boone would like it noted that he respects marsh residents and intends only to observe, not interrogate. The mix of sturdy boardwalk and soft sand keeps the walk interesting without being difficult, and the steady chorus of birds provides a soundtrack worthy of a sniff session.

The Point
The Point on Oak Island is the kind of place Luie Boone would describe as prime loafing territory. This wide, peaceful stretch of beach sits at the western tip of the island, where the ocean and inlet meet in calmer, shallower water. That means easier paw dips, less dramatic wave drama, and plenty of room for supervised splashing. It is also a shelling hotspot, which Luie Boone considers treasure hunting without paperwork.
Families, sunset watchers, and nature lovers have long claimed The Point as a favorite gathering spot. The views stretch endlessly, especially at dusk when the sky shifts into soft gold and pink tones. It stays relatively quiet compared to busier sections of the island, which gives it a relaxed, almost tucked away feel. The area is also notably dog friendly, making it easy for leashed pups to join in on beach walks and shoreline lounging. Luie Boone would personally rate it highly!

Veterans Park
Veterans Park on Oak Island sits along the Intracoastal Waterway and offers a peaceful place to slow down and take in the view. The park honors all branches of the armed forces, with a thoughtful memorial area that includes the Armed Services Memorial Brick Wall. The setting feels both respectful and serene, surrounded by coastal beauty and open water.
Visitors can stroll the waterfront boardwalk, relax on benches, cast a line from the fishing pier, or wander through the butterfly garden. Leashed pups are welcome to join, making it a lovely stop for watching boats glide by and catching a colorful sunset over the water. Luie Boone would consider this an excellent location!

Cary Cart Company
Cary Cart Company makes island life on Bald Head wonderfully simple. Since cars are not allowed on the island, golf carts become the official mode of transportation. This longtime local company provides convenient rentals for visitors and their canine co-pilots.
Cruising sandy lanes and quiet streets by cart feels like part of the Bald Head experience itself. Licensed drivers can rent and operate the carts, while leashed pups are welcome to ride along and enjoy the breeze. Luie Boone fully supports a transportation system where the top speed allows for maximum ear flapping and optimal sightseeing without unnecessary traffic drama.

Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill
Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill on Oak Island brings classic beachfront energy with the bonus of a dog friendly outdoor patio and even a dog menu for Fido. The hoomans can dig into seafood dishes, wings, tacos, burgers, and sandwiches while soaking up salty air and sunshine. Whether you grab a table inside or relax outside, the whole place leans into that easygoing coastal vibe that pairs perfectly with sandy feet and windblown fur.
Luie Boone appreciates any establishment that feeds both species responsibly. He would like to clarify, however, that while the restaurant may embrace the word lazy, his plush turtle named Spike is not lazy. Spike is highly strategic with his movements. There's a difference.
Luie Boone's Pet Peeve about
North Carolina’s Brunswick Islands
There's just so much to love about this vacation destination, but there's one thing that's got Luie Boone's leash in a twist. He woofed:
My hoomans have planned a vacation to North Carolina’s Brunswick Islands. I'm already conducting serious ocean research. I gathered my first field report from the very experienced dog down the street. He went last summer and returned with the energy of someone who has seen things. He described the ocean as the largest, most beautiful water bowl ever created. Naturally, one assumes hydration opportunity. Apparently, that assumption is incorrect. He told me it's aggressively salty, splashes directly into your eyeballs, dries out your fur, and if you drink too much, your stomach files a formal complaint. He admitted he tested this personally and does NOT recommend it. Then, I overheard my hoomans say, we’ll have to make sure Luie Boone doesn’t slurp the ocean. The fact that they are pre planning intervention strategies makes me uneasy. If a body of water requires supervision before I even meet it, that feels like a red flag. Why is the suspicious water the main attraction? So while my hoomans are counting down to sandy beaches and sunset walks, I'm preparing a strategy. I'll observe the ocean. I'll respect the ocean. I will NOT treat it like a beverage station. I will rely exclusively on my trusted fresh water bowl, which has never betrayed me. The ocean may be dramatic and beautiful, but it is not, under any circumstances, my drink.
